The Historical Context of Dental Ethics
Ahn Jae-Hyun

Abstract
This study dental ethics, issues and inquires into its appropriate course. To this end, the formative process of the dental profession is investigated and its ethical history is researched. Looking into the growth of professionalism, this study tries to unravel the role of dental ethics in that process, and it analyzed its contents and structure. The formative process and ethics of the Korean dental profession with that of Western societies are compared. This study seeks to find suitable dental ethics in Korea by identifying and solving the problems revealed during this study. Dental ethics has played an important role in the growth of professionalism. In that process, both the profession¡¯s authority and public confidence in the profession have improved significantly. It was precisely ethical practice that convinced the public to give autonomy and legal support to the profession. The dental ethics of Western societies are based upon the philosophy of professionalism, the concrete standards, and guiding principles which govern it. On the other hand, the Korean dental profession has no such experience because the dental profession was not formative but rather assigned by the government. As a result, the ethical codes have neither the historical and cultural context nor philosophical background, let alone concrete standards and legal support. Reflecting upon the real situation, it is suitable to adopt professionalism using a philosophical background. It is argued in this study that the road to professionalism is never ending. It will be an ongoing process during which the profession and the public interact and at times conflict. Dental ethics should be seen as a product of public approval and legal support resulting from this interaction. In order to achieve professionalism, Korean dentists should not only observe the current ethical codes, but also follow the guiding principles and concrete standards of dental practice. Korean dentists should find an autonomous organization for ethics and respond transparently to the concerns of the public.
